THE UNIVERSITY OF CAMBODIA SCHOOL OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES
The School of Foreign Languages (SFL) at The University of Cambodia consists of six language programs and offers courses in Chinese, English, French, Japanese, Korean, and Thai with a special focus on the study of the language, literature and culture. Students specializing in this area are fluent in a chosen language, exposed to cultures that are different from their own and have learned to negotiate these cultural differences through the study and applied research of language and literature. In addition to the above languages, potential languages will be added accordingly to meet the market needs.
I. Vision
The School of Foreign Languages (SFL) aims to provide excellent quality language training, enhance language competency and communication skills, and prepare students to engage and deal with society by providing a solid foundation of cultural knowledge, all while promoting creative and critical thinking skills essential for the flexibility needed to respond to changes of our society and the world at large. We help to develop our students’ talents and help them realise their full potential. In addition, we encourage our students to think independently and creatively, but act cooperatively with others in open-mindedness in order to contribute to build our nation, the region, and the world.
II. Mission
The School of Foreign Languages strives to produce graduates who will be fluent and competent in foreign languages, and who are able to think analytically and communicate effectively with others. It will provide a high-quality education to students in order to respond to the needs of society, and will energetically support faculties in research.
III. Goals and Objectives:
- To build and develop students’ language competency, comprehension and professional communication skills;
- To bring practical experiences on language use, literature, culture, leadership skills and social issues into the classroom;
- To enhance the quality of higher education through the quality of teaching and learning in state of the art facilities;
- To enable students to acquire an in-depth knowledge and soft skills for their future careers and life;
- To support students, faculties and staff in challenging current issues locally and internationally and provide our graduates with sufficient critical thinking skills and awareness of society.
IV. Student’s Learning Outcomes: At the end of the program, students can:

The assessment will be mainly based on UC’s policy on assessment, which covers the following modes:

- Homework and Quizzes
- Mid-term Centralized Exam
- Final Centralized exam
- Comprehensive Exit Exam (CEX401)
VII. Academic Foundation Program
The University of Cambodia’s Academic Foundation Department (AFD) has been officially recognized since it was first established in 2005 and registered and recognized officially by the Accreditation Committee of Cambodia (ACC) (ACC: Number 34/05) and the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport (MoEYS). The Academic Year Program comprises eight compulsory core courses (24 credits), together with two oriented courses (6 credits) relevant to the student’s chosen major in a language. The School of Foreign Languages plays a very important role to support AFD in designing and developing language courses for General Education and makes sure that there are adequate foreign language subjects and credits based on ACC’s guidelines of the Foundation Year Program.
VIII. Credit Transfer
Students from other accredited universities who wish to continue their studies at The University of Cambodia in any degree program can transfer credits for suitable courses which they have already passed with the equivalent to the passing grade of the grading system of The University of Cambodia.
IX. Why Choose SFL at UC?
Students graduating with a degree from the School of Foreign Languages at The University of Cambodia will be:

- well-prepared with an in-depth familiarity with their chosen subject-major;

- flexible in their outlook because of a rounded education outside their major; and able to find and compete for jobs locally and regionally.
X. Career Prospects
Graduates from these programs can expect to find jobs in, for example, teaching a chosen major language, education, translation services, cultural organizations, community services, the media, governmental and other institutions, tourism-related companies, and embassies where there is contact with non-Cambodians.
XI. Resources and facilities:
The University of Cambodia has the following to further enhance the learning experience of our students: the Toshu Fukami Library and UC E-Library- one of the best in Cambodia; a Computer Lab, as well as an IT Center and a Virtual Library; the Center for ASEAN Study; the Centre for English Studies, with its own Language Laboratory to help increase students’ capabilities in English; and the Skills and Career Development Center to help students develop their leadership potential and provide information and support regarding internships and career and job opportunities.
XII. Admission Requirements:
All existing UC policies regarding admission, attendance, assessment and qualifying for graduation, together with the Student Code of Conduct and other relevant policies, apply for all Associate’s and Bachelor’s students. Thus, as is standard UC policy on Admission and Registration, students who are admitted directly to a program must pass the Entrance Exam for admission to an undergraduate program.
1. To be admitted to an AA Program, potential students will first be required to have adequate language proficiency for chosen language major, based on passing a standard test. UC can accept students who meet one of the following criteria:
o Have completed national general education, grade 12 (for AA)
o Pass UC placement test (in a chosen language major)
o Have a certificate of completion in Level Six (in a chosen language major )
o Have a certificate of TEVET
o Have a certificate of Foundation Year Program (credit-transferred students)
o Other equivalent certificates
2. To be admitted to a BA Program, potential students will first be required to have adequate language proficiency for chosen language major, based on passing a standard test. UC can accept students who meet one of the following criteria:
o Have a certificate of completion in Level Six (in a chosen language major )
o Have IELTS 5.5 ( For English major)
o TOEFL 550 ( For English major)
o Have a certificate of high school
o Have a certificate of Level 3 of TEVET
o Have a certificate of Foundation Year Program (credit-transferred students)
o Other equivalent certificates

In addition to fulfilling the Foundation Year and General Education requirements set by The University of Cambodia, students doing an Associate’s degree in Chinese Language must do a minimum of 36 relevant credit hours in Chinese:CHN101 and CHN102 are both parts of the General Education requirements, and thus cannot be counted towards the major. In order to fulfill the Associate’s degree requirement in Chinese, students must take the four core courses: CHN103- CHN106 (12 credits), along with eight major electives (24 credits). Four elective courses (12 credits) can be taken from seven major courses (21 credits) in the same major.

The Associate’s Degree in French Language offers students a broad-based background for a career in secondary-level teaching, including a range of elective courses and general education courses in a particular field that will broaden the students’ horizon. This will equip them with relevant skills and at the same time prepare them for a Bachelor’s Degree in French Language or other career options.
All students are required to take and pass 08 General Elective Courses (24 credits) and a minimum of 12 Major Courses (36 credits), and 04 Other Elective Courses. Thereafter, students may choose to register for the Comprehensive Examination preparation before they can take Comprehensive Exit exam.

In addition to fulfilling the Foundation Year and General Education requirements set by The University of Cambodia, students doing a Bachelor’s degree in Chinese Language must do a minimum of 54 relevant credit hours in Chinese: CHN101 and CHN 102 are both part of the General Education requirements, and thus cannot be counted towards the major. In order to fulfill the Bachelor’s degree requirement in Chinese, students must take the four core courses: CHN103, CHN104, CHN105 and CHN106 (12 credits), along with fourteen major electives (42 credits). Of the other eleven elective courses (33 credits) which the student must take, up to a maximum of six courses (18 credits) can be from within the same major.

In addition to fulfilling the Foundation Year and General Education requirements set by The University of Cambodia, students doing a Bachelor’s degree in French Language must have a minimum of 54 relevant credit hours in French: FRN101 and FRN102 are both part of the General Education requirements, and thus cannot be counted towards the major. In order to fulfill the Bachelor’s degree requirements in French, students must take the four core courses FRN111-f=FRN114 (12 credits), along with fourteen major elective courses (42 credits). Of the other eleven elective courses (33 credits) which the student must take, up to a maximum of six courses (18 credits) can be from within the same major.
